Ce fut long, quelquefois laborieux, voire difficile.

L’association Ensemble pour l’environnement et le patrimoine à St. Thomas and the municipality invited everyone to the inauguration of the renovated Chapel Street on Saturday, October 30th at 15:30, at the chapel.

Father Loiseau blessed the place and Marion Middenway, who had performed at a concert to fund the work in 2008 played a selection on the cello inside the chapel.

The culmination of a long journey – of joys and challenges, of the renovation done by the volunteers.

The story of this renovation began in 2003. Géneviève Marietta, native to the area, participated in a competition in the Pilgrim Magazine "a heritage for tomorrow." A dossier was opened and a book of support collected 130 signatures of residents of the commune and surrounding areas. Genevieve Marietta’s project did not win the competition.

The association "Ensemble pour l’environnement … " was created at the same time. The renovation of the chapel as a project of the association was proposed in late 2005

In early 2007, an altar stone was discovered under the old wooden altar. In late March 2007, Gervais Barré, an expert at the Society of Architecture and History of Mayenne (SAHM) gave his opinion on this stone and on the renovation of the chapel. The stone is a 14th century tombstone, which (assumption) must have experienced some incidents since its place of origin, the old church of St Thomas.

The council came to see the building and discuss the work with members of the association, specifications and methods of reovation. A agreement in principle on the work and payment for materials by the commune was received by the municipality in May 2008

Time passed, availabilities changed.

The work actually began in February 2009. Dismantling the ceiling, fixing battens, lime plaster work and plastering the ceiling and walls of the chapel, then putting on a fine layer of lime finishing plaster, painting niches renovation of the door and making a new circular window. We were now in December 2009.

In 2010, we had to redo all the interior finish (scrape off the lime plaster and paint). Finish the floor (a few tiles to put down) and put the circular glass window in place.

The chapel was ready at the end of August.

Only the refurbishment of the objects remained and to officially give it back to the municipality and the residents of St. Thomas.

It was long, sometimes laborious and difficult. But it's done and we are pleased with the progress and outcome.

The association wishes to thank all members who participated in this work and especially Marion Middenway for the concert in April 2008, Serge Boulay for his active participation with the work, Mike Gaisford for the time he gave (lime and plaster), Eddie Wade for the restoration of the door and the manufacture of the window, Gerard Filloche for the painting of the niches and two paintings he offered to the chapel and Roger Chauvet for the glazing of the window.
